The Wood Finishes

Table with shellac and wipe-on poly.

I do not use stains or paints on, in or even around, the furniture I build. I mostly use two methods to achieve a durable finish. One is an economical combination of all-natural shellac, a sustainable product, and wipe-on polyurethane which gives an extremely resilient protection to the furniture. It's amazing how it brings out the wood grain so beautifully and gives it that fine look and nice patina.

The second method I use is a natural non-toxic wipe-on penetrating oil. It takes a bit longer to apply than the first method, but the environmental properties are a big plus. It leaves a mellow organic patina that suits my work well. Either way both methods will never require refinishing. I also use a finish of thinned shellac and paste wax for delicate woods.
